Renowned Physicians in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Dr. Qu Wenlou

 

Dr. Qu Wenlou (1891-1957), a renowned traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theorist and physician.

 

Dr. Qu was born in Xin Chen, Hebei Province. Aimed at carrying on a dynamic succession of his father’s career, an imperial physician in the late Qing Dynasty, Dr. Qu was guided to a detailed reading on the TCM classic books since his childhood. After four years of study in the medical college affiliated to the Qing Imperial Medical Academy, Dr. Qu graduated top of his class in 1908 and became an appointed medical doctor.

 

In 1911, the Xin Hai Revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen overthrew the Qing Dynasty. After the revolution, Dr. Qu opened his private practice in Peking. In 1933, Dr. Qu was hired to lecture on TCM in the Medical School in North China established by Shi Jinmo, a celebrated TCM physician and educator. In 1934, Dr. Qu engaged in assisting physicians Kong Bohua, Xiao Longyou, et al, to found the Peking Chinese Medicine Medical School, and taught TCM internal medicine, pediatrics and Epidemic Febrile Disease in the school. From 1939 to 1942, Dr. Qu taught TCM in medical sessions at the Chinese Medicine Institution started by Wang Fengchun in Peking.  In 1956, Dr. Qu was appointed as the principal academic adviser at the founding of the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the predecessor of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Dr. Qu also served as a consultant in the Ministry of Health and Beijing Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
